Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best flooring for radiant heat systems?

A number of surfaces can be used for flooring over radiant heating systems. When comparing the benefits of tile vs. hardwood vs. laminate, many homeowners prefer the beauty, elegance and warmth of a radiant heat wood floor.

Can you use radiant heat with wood floors?

Yes. It is important to understand that there are many different types of radiant heat and subfloor systems. Your specific system and environmental conditions may dictate the use of a certain structure, wood or width. At Carlisle we have been installing wood flooring over radiant for decades and your Wide Plank Specialist can help you navigate the variable toward making the best decision for your situation.

How are engineered floorboards made?

Engineered flooring is made with multiple layers of material that are glued together to form a strong core. The planks are then topped with a veneer of hardwood, called the wear layer, which is the part of the board that is seen and walked on. This construction forms a solid core that is more resistant to changes in moisture and humidity. Unfinished engineered flooring can be finished or stained just like solid hardwood floors. Engineered boards are ideal for installation below grade, over concrete slab, or in locations where the moisture level for hardwood flooring made of solid wood may be too high.

Can engineered radiant heat wood floors installed with a pattern?

Yes. Engineered floorboards can be installed in the same way you'd install a solid wood floor. Engineered Herringbone flooring or Chevron flooring are popular options for patterned or parquet floors, and Carlisle design consultants can help you create a custom pattern.

Choosing the wood for your radiant heat wood floor

When choosing a radiant heat wood floor, Carlisle offers engineered floors in a variety of hardwoods that provide a range of colors and character.

  • Red Oak is a captivating hardwood that can be as rustic or as modern as required. With deep, salmon tones in the heartwood and a tight, consistent grain structure, Red Oak offers authentic character in planks of exceptional width and length.
  • White Oak is a versatile hardwood that can complement any design scheme. With rich, nutty brown and cocoa hues and dramatic grain patterns, White Oak is a highly durable floor that takes stain quite well.
  • Rift and Quartersawn White Oak planks make for strikingly beautiful hardwood floors with straight parallel lines in the grain. Floorboards are cut at a 90° angle from the log’s growth rings to create tight, consistent grain patterns with vibrant ray flecks.
  • Brown Maple has a natural aesthetic beauty that makes it equally at home in traditional and contemporary designs. With subtle and consistent grain patterns, Brown Maple offers striking variations in color and character that include distinctive brown streaks in the heartwood.
  • White Maple floors feature natural color tones with cleaner and lighter hues. The strikingly beautiful but subtle grain patterns of White Maple make it an ideal hardwood for both traditional and modern décor, and it’s a perfect choice for light engineered wood flooring.
  • Ash can be easily stained with a wide range of tones for dramatic results in a range of settings. When finished naturally, Ash offers neutral and natural hues in many variations that range from light blonde to cream to rich nutty brown.
  • Birch makes unique, captivating floors where each board features subtle patterns in the grain that range from swirls to highly figured flames. Birch boasts hues of rich reddish-brown in the heartwood with blonde outer edges and warm amber portions.
  • Cherry features hues of deep glowing red that mature to a rich, burnished auburn color as the floor ages. The grain pattern in a cherry floorboard is subtle but distinctive, making this hardwood an excellent option for both traditional and contemporary designs.
  • Hickory is an extremely tough and durable wood with interesting grain patterns that make it a highly versatile wood. The hues in a Hickory floor can range from rich cocoa brown and beige to lighter blonde.
  • Walnut floors offer chocolate hues with lighter-colored sapwood and darker heartwood. Its complex grain patterns create a spectacular floor, with or without stain. Walnut is an excellent option for dark engineered hardwood flooring.
