Moisture Level for Hardwood Flooring

What’s a safe moisture level for hardwood flooring?

When you’re considering hardwood floors for your home, the level of moisture and humidity in any given room will help determine which type of flooring is best. When solid hardwood floors are exposed to high levels of humidity, the wood will absorb moisture and cause the floor to swell and expand. In extremely dry conditions, the wood will shrink and contract, potentially causing gaps to appear between boards. In a worst-case scenario, changes in humidity can cause floorboards to warp or crack.

When you have a room with a high moisture level for hardwood flooring, engineered floorboards are an excellent option. Engineered floors are ideal for installation below grade – think basement or cellar flooring – and over radiant heating systems or concrete slabs. When you have a low moisture level for hardwood flooring – anything below 30% relative humidity – solid hardwood is your best bet as engineered boards aren’t designed to perform well when the air is that dry.

At Carlisle Wide Plank Floors, we offer a diverse range of solid and engineered hardwood surfaces that make it easy to find the perfect floor for any room and any environment. Frequently Asked Questions

What are safe moisture levels for hardwood flooring?

The ideal moisture level for hardwood floors is between 30% and 55% relative humidity. When moisture levels drop below 30%, some hardwood floors may be in danger of splintering or cracking. For moisture levels above 55%, floors may be in danger of swelling and warping. Wide plank floors offer more protection from these seasonal changes -- with fewer seams in the floor, you'll inherently have fewer gaps.

Are humidifiers bad for hardwood floors?

A humidifier can be beneficial for hardwood floors by keeping the relative humidity in a room between 30% and 55%. It's important, however, to take steps to prevent water from leaking or dripping on the floor, and to not raise the relative humidity above 55%.

What's the ideal moisture level for hardwood flooring?

Anything between 30% and 55% relative humidity is considered the ideal moisture level for hardwood flooring.

What is engineered hardwood flooring?

Engineered boards are made with a veneer of hardwood that's adhered to multiple layers of backing material – at Carlisle, we use Exterior-grade Plywood – to create a floorboard that's more resistant to moisture and humidity. In addition to installation below grade or on concrete slabs, engineered floorboards are an excellent option for a radiant heat wood floor.

Can engineered hardwood flooring be prefinished?

Yes. Prefinished floors are sanded, stained and sealed at our facility before they're shipped to your home for installation. As a result, you can avoid the mess, odor and inconvenience of having your floor finished on site.

Can engineered hardwood flooring be installed as a pattern?

Yes. Engineered floorboards can be installed with any pattern you would use with solid wood floors. At Carlisle, we offer engineered Herringbone flooring, Chevron flooring, Versailles flooring, and many custom patterned floors as well.
