Unfinished Engineered Flooring

The advantages of unfinished engineered flooring

Unfinished engineered flooring greatly expands your possibilities for adding or replacing hardwood floors in your home. Engineered floors are designed for installation in places where solid wood flooring would normally crack or warp because of excess moisture or high humidity throughout the year. Unfinished engineered flooring is ideal for cellar flooring or laundry room flooring, for example, enabling you to add the beauty of hardwood floors to spaces you might not previously have considered. Unfinished engineered flooring is not recommended for location where relative humidity falls below 30% for any extended period of time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is unfinished engineered wood flooring?

Unfinished engineered flooring is a floor made with engineered wood that has not yet been sanded, stained or sealed. Engineered floors are made with multiple layers of material, including a top layer (or "wear layer") of hardwood and multiple backing layers that are glued together. The wear layer of an engineered floor may be made of any species such as White Oak, Red Oak, Hickory, Maple and other hardwoods or Pines.

What are the benefits of an engineered wood floor?

Engineered floors are more resistant to higher levels of humidity – they can be installed in locations where hardwood floors would normally warp or crack. Engineered floors are often installed below grade, over concrete slab and on radiant heating systems.

What is engineered vs. manufactured vs. laminate flooring?

Manufactured hardwood floors are the same as engineered flooring – they mean exactly the same thing. Laminate flooring is made by gluing a top layer – called the "design layer" – to a fiberboard backing layer. The design layer is imprinted with an image that can resemble anything – solid wood flooring, tile, cork or even fabric. Like unfinished engineered hardwood flooring, laminate surfaces are ideal in locations where humidity changes would cause solid wood flooring to warp, split, buckle or cup.

Can unfinished engineered flooring be installed with a pattern?

Absolutely. Unfinished engineered flooring can be installed with a wide variety of patterns. At Carlisle, we offer several options for engineered Herringbone flooring and can work with you to explore other patterns for your engineered floor.

Can I stain an engineered wood floor?

Yes. Because the top layer of an engineered floor is made from solid hardwood, you can treat it just as you would treat a solid wood floor. Carlisle offers virtually unlimited options for stains, making it easy to install dark or light engineered wood flooring as you wish. Certain woods like White Oak and Red Oak will accept stains more easily than other woods. Hickory, for example, has a tight pore structure that doesn't absorb stain as easily, while Maple is difficult to stain evenly and without blotches.

What is prefinished vs. unfinished engineered flooring?

Unfinished engineered hardwood flooring will arrive at your location ready to be installed and then sanded, stained and sealed on site. With prefinished engineered flooring, those tasks are accomplished before delivery. We sand, stain and seal the floorboards in the ideal conditions of our manufacturing facility, making it possible in some cases to apply stain to all sides of the board to mitigate seasonal gapping. Prefinished floors enable homeowners to avoid the mess of sanding and finishing a floor onsite. Prefinished wood floors also make installation faster and less expensive.

Does new flooring increase home value?

There are a lot of factors that help determine the value of a home, but the short answer is yes – new flooring does increase home value. Hardwood flooring is among the most popular flooring options for homebuyers, and new hardwood floors add to the appeal of any property.

Does Carlisle offer a warranty on unfinished engineered wood floors?

Carlisle offers a lifetime structural warranty and a refinishing warranty on flooring and finishing products. You can view all the details of Carlisle's warranty here.
