Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hickory hand-scraped hardwood flooring?

Hickory hand-scraped hardwood flooring is a surface made from solid, or engineered, Hickory floorboards that have been textured or "scraped" with a knife to give the floor an antique appearance. Before the advent of modern woodworking machines, floorboards were often milled at slightly different thicknesses. To create a more even transition between the boards, woodworkers would bevel the edges of the thicker boards and scrape the thicker portions with a knife in an effort to create a more level surface.

What are the benefits of hand-scraped edges?

A hand-scraped hardwood floor has a certain authenticity and vintage appearance that gives a floor a greater sense of character and visual interest.

Why choose Hickory hardwood floors?

Hickory is one of the most durable floors available, boasting an 1820 rating on the Janka wood hardness chart, which is a significant factor when considering Hickory vs. Walnut or Hickory vs. Oak flooring.

Hickory is also a handsome wood, with rich cocoa browns and beiges in the heartwood and lighter blonde hues in the sapwood.

Does new flooring increase home value?

Yes, depending on the type of floor. New hardwood floors are among the most popular type of flooring material for prospective homebuyers.

What is distressed flooring vs. antique flooring?

Antique flooring is a floor made with old floorboards that have been salvaged from other buildings. Worn down by time and foot traffic, antique floorboards have a great deal of character that adds immediate warmth and authenticity to any room. Distressed floors are new floors where the floorboards have been textured or distressed to give them an antique look.

Beyond hand-scraped edges: more ways to texture your floor

At Carlisle, we offer a variety of other texturing techniques that can add even more personality to your Hickory hand-scraped hardwood flooring. Some of our methods are common, while others are proprietary to Carlisle.

Our Brushed technique, for instance, uses specially designed brushes to wear down the softer grains in a plank, creating a worn appearance. Our Footworn method uses special tools to hand sculpt each board and reproduce the undulating patterns that appear in wood that has been walked on for generations. Our Timeworn technique relies on a proprietary process to give new floorboards the appearance of planks that have been worn down by time.

To create the saw swirl marks, or saw kerfs, that were a hallmark of planks cut at early sawmills, we use a Hit or Miss technique to give new floorboards an antique feel.
