What species of wood is best for colonial flooring?

Most colonial flooring was originally cut from Pine trees. At Carlisle, we offer three species of Pine, including the Eastern White Pine that was often originally used for many colonial floors. We also offer hardwood species that can be fashioned to reproduce a colonial look, including Ash, Birch, Brown Maple, Cherry, Hickory, Red Oak, Walnut, White Maple, White Oak and Rift & Quartersawn White Oak.

Can colonial hardwood flooring be made from engineered wood?

Yes. Engineered floorboards are made with multiple layers of material to produce a core that is more resistant to temperature changes, humidity and moisture. At Carlisle, we offer engineered flooring in a wide variety of wood species and planks that are up to 10” wide and 12’ long, making it easy to recreate the appearance of colonial hardwood flooring with engineered planks.
