Hardwood floors 101: Engineered Oak hardwood flooring
Engineered Oak hardwood flooring is one of the most popular types of floors available today. A White Oak or Red Oak floor provides a warm and fairly neutral surface that can be finished to meet the needs of any design scheme – from formal dining rooms to casual family rooms. And engineered flooring makes it possible to enjoy a wood surface in rooms where solid hardwood floors would typically warp or crack. With engineered Oak floorboards, you get a hardwood floor whose beauty matches its versatility.
At Carlisle, our engineered Oak hardwood flooring is among the most stable and durable engineered products on the market. And as a leader in wide plank floors, we offer engineered Oak hardwood flooring with planks that are much wider and longer than nearly all of our competitors.
Contact a Carlisle wide plank specialist today to compare the benefits of Oak with Hickory or Birch engineered flooring, and to explore all your options for wood grades, width, texture, color and finishes.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is engineered Oak hardwood flooring?
Engineered Oak hardwood flooring is a surface made with engineered floorboards that have a veneer of Oak hardwood. Engineered floorboards are made with a top layer, or wear layer, of solid hardwood that is adhered with glue to several layers of a backing material. The result is a floorboard that's much more resistant to moisture and may perform better in areas with higher overall relative humidity– it won't warp or split like solid floorboards are prone to do in similar situations.
What is unfinished Oak vs. prefinished Oak engineered flooring?
Unfinished Oak floors – solid or engineered – are delivered ready to be sanded, stained and sealed after installation in your home. With prefinished floors, these tasks are completed before delivery to your location. There's a certain amount of mess and inconvenience when working with unfinished Red Oak flooring, for example. Sanding creates a great deal of sawdust and the odor from stains can be overwhelming. When floors are sealed on site, it often requires homeowners to vacate the property for up to 5 days or longer depending on the size of the job. Prefinished flooring lets you skip those steps and accelerate your installation process.
Can engineered Oak hardwood flooring be textured?
Yes. Carlisle craftsman use a variety of techniques to give new engineered floors the appearance of surfaces that are much older.
Why choose Oak vs. Maple vs. Walnut floors?
The choice of Oak vs. Maple or Walnut vs. Oak usually comes down to appearance and density. Oak is harder than Walnut but not as tough as Maple. Oak takes stain more easily than Maple, allowing Oak to be used in a wider range of interior designs. Oak offers lighter hues than Walnut, which is appealing for homeowners who want lighter or more neutral floors.
Can I use a Herringbone pattern with engineered floors?
Yes. Engineered Oak hardwood flooring can be installed with a variety of patterns. Carlisle offers a variety of options for Herringbone flooring from, from a variety of Collection floor options to starting fresh and inventing your own perfect combination of size, species and color
What's the best way to clean engineered Oak hardwood flooring?
Sweeping and vacuuming your floors frequently will eliminate the dirt and debris that can cause dents and scratches. Mopping your floors lightly with a mild solution of water and a little vinegar can help to loosen dirt easily.

The Carlisle difference: engineered Oak hardwood flooring
Carlisle has been a leader in solid wood flooring for more than 50 years, and today we lead the industry in engineered Oak hardwood flooring as well. Our engineered floors are made with a thicker backing material with more plies, adding stability and strength to each floorboard. The top layer on our engineered Oak hardwood flooring is thicker as well, enabling it to last just as long as a solid wood floor. Our engineered floorboards are much wider and longer than our competitors’ – up to 10″ in width and up to 12′ in length. And our SlowCraft™ production process delivers floors of much higher quality than the mass-produced floors offered by our competitors.
