The benefits of manufactured hardwood floors
When you’re considering new floors for your home, your very first choice is likely between solid and manufactured hardwood floors. Solid planks cut from a single piece of timber are the basis for classic hardwood floors, while manufactured floors are made with floorboards where several layers of material are glued together. This construction makes for more durable wood floors in locations that have higher levels of moisture and therefore higher relative humidity. Manufactured or engineered floors are not well suited for locations where relative humidity may fall below 30% for extended periods of time. Manufactured hardwood floors are ideal for cellar flooring and mud room flooring, for example, and for installation over radiant heat or concrete slab.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are manufactured hardwood floors?
Manufactured hardwood floors, or engineered hardwood floors, are floors made with engineered planks. In a manufactured hardwood floor, a veneer of hardwood is glued to multiple layers of a backing material to form a floorboard with a core that can better withstand significant changes in humidity, but are not suited for environments with relative humidity below 30%.
What's the best location for manufactured hardwood floors?
Manufactured hardwood floors are often installed in locations below grade such as basements. They are also ideal for installation over radiant heating systems and on concrete slabs. Because they are more resistant to moisture, manufactured hardwood floors also make great bathroom, mud room and laundry room flooring.
What are manufactured hardwood vs. laminate floors?
While manufactured hardwood floors have a top layer of real hardwood, laminate floors are made with a backing material like fiberboard that's adhered to an image layer – essentially a printed image that looks like wood, stone or some other material – and topped with a transparent wear layer to protect the image layer.
Can manufactured hardwood floors be stained?
Yes. Anything you can do with a solid hardwood floor you can also do with manufactured hardwood floors.
What are prefinished vs. manufactured hardwood floors?
A prefinished floor is one that is sanded, stained and sealed in a manufacturing facility before it is shipped to a jobsite. Manufactured hardwood floors can be prefinished, allowing you to avoid the mess and inconvenience of having your floor finished on site.
Can manufactured floors be installed with a pattern?
Yes. The Carlisle Collection includes several manufactured floors with a Herringbone pattern. Our design consultants can also work with you to explore other patterns such as Chevron, Versailles and custom patterns
Installing your manufactured hardwood floors
Carlisle manufactured hardwood floors are installed just like any other hardwood floor. Your floor will arrive in a crate, wrapped in moisture-protective material and secured with steel bands to protect it during transit. We’ll send you and your installer a detailed instruction sheet outlining everything you’ll need for delivery and installation.
Carlisle wide plank floors can be installed with a combination of staples, nails, and/or glue, or with direct glue down installation. The best installation methods for your floor depend on the environment and the subsurface over which your floor will be installed. There is no “trick” to installing a wide plank floor – there will just be fewer boards to work with, since the planks are wider and longer than traditional floorboards. Throughout the process, your wide plank specialist will be available to answer questions and offer suggestions about ways to maximize the beauty and durability of your new Carlisle manufactured hardwood floors.
