Matte-finish Hardwood Floor

The beauty of a matte-finish hardwood floor

While the shine of glossy hardwood floors is undeniably appealing, a matte-finish hardwood floor is where the real character and personality of the wood can be revealed. Matte hardwood floors are finished with a sealant that has a low level of luster or sheen, which refers to the amount of light that the floor reflects. High-sheen or glossy floors will reflect a great deal of light, giving them a shiny, almost liquid appearance. Low-sheen or matte floors have very little luster, which allows the detail in the grain, texture and personality of the wood to be more easily seen.

Matte-finish hardwood floors are in vogue today as many homeowners are choosing design schemes that highlight the character of their wood floors. Textured floors with original saw marks, hand-scraped edges or wire-brushed treatments will be more easily appreciated when finished with a matte sealant.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a matte finish on hardwood floors?

A matte-finish hardwood floor is one that uses a low-luster sealant as the final, top coat of protection. Hardwood floors are typically sealed with polyurethane, wax or penetrating oil to protect them from stains, spills, scratches and scuff marks. The type of sealant used to protect the floor will have a certain level of luster or sheen. Low-luster or matte finishes will reflect very little light, creating a duller finish. Satin finishes have more luster, and semi-gloss or high-loss finishes will reflect a great deal of light for an extraordinarily shiny appearance. Wax and penetrating oils provide a natural matte finish, while a urethane wood floor can be sealed with a glossy, satin or matte finish.

What are the advantages of a matte-finish hardwood floor?

A matte-finish hardwood floor offers a very natural look that reveals the color and grain of the hardwood planks more easily. With a luster level between 15% and 25%, matte floors will also hide scratches, dirt, streaks and scuffs more easily, making it easier to keep the floor looking clean. For this reason, matte finishes are often used in high-traffic areas within a home.

Is there a lower sheen than Matte?

Yes, we also offer an Extra Matte finish with a sheen level between 6-9%. This creates a very unfinished look to the floor lending a more organic look to each plank.

What is the most popular finish for hardwood floors?

The most common finish for hardwood floors is probably a satin. With a luster level around 30-40%, a satin-finish hardwood floor offers a nice balance between the shine of a glossy floor and the ease of maintenance of a matte floor. However, today the trend is moving toward the lowest sheen levels that can be achieved in either a Matte or Extra Matte finish.

How do you make a matte finish on a wood floor?

To create a matte-finish hardwood floor, the final coat of sealant must have a matte sheen.

Are matte floors hard to clean?

A matte-finish hardwood floor is easier to keep clean than other hardwood surfaces. Matte floors will hide dust and dirt more easily than satin or semi-gloss hardwood floors.
