Wide plank knotty Pine flooring is a floor made with floorboards usually cut from White Pine trees. The knots in the boards must be small and tight to prevent them from falling out. Wide plank Pine flooring is typically made with floorboards that are 5" to 20" in width and up to 12' in length. Compared to standard commercial flooring – which features boards that are 2¼" to 3" wide and 3' to 4' long – a wide plank floor has far fewer seems and a greater sense of spaciousness and elegance.
Pine is typically much softer than hardwoods. Eastern White Pine has a 380 rating on the Janka wood hardness chart, far less than the 1290 rating of Red Oak or the 1450 rating of Maple. As a result, Pine will be much more susceptible to scratches, dents and dings, which can give a floor "lived-on" and rustic appearance. That said, Pine floors can last for generations or even centuries, but they will show their age more easily.
Yellow Pine is considerably harder than White Pine, making it more resistant to wear. White Pine is softer and more workable. Both species have hues that range from off-white to amber and yellow, but Yellow Pine tends to have more pronounced grain patterns.

"Dirty top" refers to a floor where the floorboards retain original saw marks, imperfections and signs of wear from generations of use. Dirty top Pine flooring can be a floor made with antique Pine boards that have been reclaimed from other buildings, or a floor made with new boards that have been distressed to give them an antique appearance.
Wide plank knotty Pine flooring can be cleaned just as you'd clean any other wood floor. You can prevent wear by keeping the floors clean of dust and debris. And a light mopping with a mild solution of water and a little vinegar will easily loosen most dirt particles.
