Distressed Cherry hardwood flooring is treated with a variety of techniques to give it an aged and antique appearance. At Carlisle, our craftsmen use several methods to distress our wide plank floors, including adding hand scraped edges, reproducing the saw marks from early sawmills, and adding gentle wear and weatherization to recreate the look of boards that have been lived on and walked on for generations.
While unfinished Cherry flooring must be finished after installation, prefinished Cherry hardwood flooring is sanded, stained and sealed at a manufacturer’s facility before it is delivered for installation. Prefinished Cherry hardwood flooring enables you to skip the mess of sanding and staining and to avoid the inconvenience of having to vacate the premise for a day or two while the floor is sealed.
Engineered Cherry wood flooring is made with a veneer of Cherry hardwood that is typically glued to multiple layers of a backing material like pressboard, fiberboard or plywood. At Carlisle, we use a suitable plywood substrate for backing material to produce a stronger engineered floor. The construction of engineered flooring is designed to provide greater resilience in setting that have higher-than-normal fluctuations in temperature and moisture. Unlike solid wood flooring, an engineered floor will not expand or contract with these large changes in relative timidity. Engineered flooring is not appropriate for environments that consistently fall below 30% relative humidity.
Cherry has a Janka hardness rating of 995, placing it among the softer options for hardwood flooring and roughly equal to the hardness of Walnut floors. However, with professional finishing and proper care, Cherry hardwood flooring can easily last for several generations.
Cherry hardwood flooring can be easily cleaned with a simple solution of immigrant water (one or 2 ounces of vinegar to 2 gallons of water), but you should always check the instructions provided by the manufacturer or installer of your floor for the most appropriate cleaning methods.
