What is Versailles flooring?

Versailles flooring is a parquet or pattern floor with a design that was first used in the French Palace of Versailles in the 17th century. A Versailles wood floor pattern is created with floorboards cut into short squares, rectangles and triangles and fitted together on a diagonal like a puzzle inside a series of square shapes bordered by longer floorboards. The pattern has an interwoven appearance which may be made more pronounced by using floorboards of different colors or different materials.

What is a parquet floor?

A hardwood parquet floor is a surface where the floorboards are installed in a pattern. Common patterns include Herringbone, Chevron and Versailles.

What are the advantages of parquet wood flooring?

A parquet pattern makes the floor a major design element that adds visual interest to any room.

Can a Versailles floor be refinished?

A Versailles pattern hardwood floor can be refinished like any other hardwood floor. However, because the various pieces of the pattern are installed at different angles, sanding the floor is much more time-consuming since each floorboard should be sanded along its grain rather than across it.

What are the advantages of a Versailles floor?

A Versailles floor makes for a stunning design element within a room, adding a sense of luxury, elegance and sophistication to an interior design.

Can Versailles flooring be made with engineered boards?

Yes. Engineered floors are made with a top layer of hardwood and multiple layers of backing material that are adhered together to form a floorboard that is more resistant to changes or higher levels of moisture and humidity. Versailles engineered flooring is ideal for installation in basements, over radiant heating systems and on concrete slabs. Engineered parquet floors should not be used in areas where the relative humidity gets below 30%.

Can a Versailles floor be prefinished?

Yes. Prefinishing a Versailles floor speeds installation and allows the homeowner to avoid the mess, smell and inconvenience of finishing the floor on site. Prefinished floors are sanded, stained and sealed within the ideal conditions of a flooring manufacturer’s facility before they are shipped to a job site.

Can you stain a Versailles floor?

Versailles hardwood flooring can be stained in a variety of hues. Staining certain pieces of a Versailles floor will help accentuate the pattern.

Does a Versailles floor cost more?

Because assembling Versailles wood flooring involves many more cut pieces that must be assembled in an intricate fashion, the cost of installation is generally higher than for a standard wood floor. However, it’s also possible to purchase pre-built panels of parquet flooring that measure approximately 40”x 40” and can be installed like a very large tile, saving the time of installing individual pieces.

Is a Versailles floor outdated?

While Versailles floors have in use since the 17th century, they have been more popular at certain times than others. Parquet flooring in general fell out of favor in the 1970s, but many homeowners today are choosing patterns like Versailles and others as they seek to design one-of-a-kind interiors.

Can a Versailles floor be textured?

Yes. Texturing gives new wooden planks the appearance of floorboards that have been lived on and walked on for centuries. Flooring craftsmen apply various texturing techniques to wear away the grain, leaving a footworn and timeworn appearance.

How do you clean a Versailles floor?

A Versailles floor may be cleaned just as any other hardwood floor. Regular sweeping and vacuuming will help to remove dust and debris. Stubborn dirt or contaminants may be cleaned with a mixture of white vinegar and water (1 or 2 ounces of vinegar per 2 gallons of water), a solution that is both safe for the wood floor and friendly to the environment.

What are Herringbone and Chevron patterns?

In Herringbone and Chevron pattern floors, each successive floorboard is laid out at an angle from the previous board. A Herringbone pattern uses rectangular boards that are laid out with the end of one board abutting the end of another at a right angle. The overlapping effect offers a pleasant asymmetry and an exciting sense of movement. In a Chevron pattern, the ends of each board are cut at an angle so that two adjacent boards form a V shape. The result is a series of rows of arrows with a slightly cleaner feel than a Herringbone pattern.
