Carlisle Donates New Floors to Stonewall Farm

Carlisle has a long-standing commitment to giving back to the community but some causes are particularly near and dear to us. Stonewall Farm, a non-profit farm and education center in Keene, NH, is where many of us adventure out on hiking trails and where our president, Chris Sy, spent college summers running new fence lines throughout the property and building and maintaining many of the trails that are used today. Chris’ children created wonderful memories of hayrides and crayfish searches during Stonewall Farm summer camps.
Stonewall Farm preserves nearly 130 acres of biodiverse lands with over six miles of recreational trails. Once a dairy farm, Stonewall Farm became a non-profit in 1994 to share the land and farming with the public. Today, the farm’s mission is to demonstrate ecological sustainability and cultivate community through education and engagement with local food systems and our shared natural resources.
Since 1994, generations have enjoyed access to the farm’s free public spaces, hiking trails, farm events, educational programming and summer camps. Generations have also trod the same carpeting in the farm’s learning center and the linoleum in the kitchens since the non-profit was founded. By 2023, it was clearly time for a refresh.
Rebecca Todd, Executive Director at Stonewall Farm, explains that “we wanted to expand our educational programs for children and adults to teach about growing and cooking our own food, and we also planned to expand our summer camps by 25%. It was a priority to have a clean and welcoming facility.”
In February 2023, Rebecca contacted Chris and asked if Carlisle Wide Plank Floors could donate floors for the program room and two kitchens in the Learning Center. We responded by contributing prefinished clear-coated, White Oak hardwood planks for all the spaces. “Stonewall Farm has been an institution in Cheshire County for over a century, all the way back to its time as a dairy farm. We were happy to help update spaces and support the farm’s mission,” says Chris.
Farm staff pulled up the old carpeting and linoleum themselves and installed the wide plank flooring using local resources. Rebecca says that “Carlisle was with us every step of the way. We had a lot of questions and they were extraordinarily helpful.”
The floors were installed prior to April vacation camps and have been what Rebecca terms as “transformative.” “Carlisle’s tremendous gift allowed us to pay more attention to our physical structure and create a welcoming, clean, lovely interior environment. We are thrilled by Carlisle’s generosity and spirit of community.”
