Case Study: Bradley Residence

Introduction

Michael Bradley of Refined Custom Homes had a vision – build a stunning custom home at his family’s favorite vacation destination.

As an Arizona based custom home builder, Michael is familiar with the building process and all the details that go into turning a vision into a reality. For years, he had been collecting information on the products he wanted to use in the home and one of those products was Carlisle wide plank floors.

Goals

Michael’s primary goal was to create a custom home with plenty of space for relaxing and entertaining. The home is filled with large common areas where family members and guests can relax and enjoy many of the homes luxurious amenities both inside and out.

The living room features the plush comfort of leather sofa and cozy armchairs with a floor to ceiling fireplace just waiting to warm you after a long day on the slopes.  The family game room, which takes up much of the lower level of the home, offers entertainment for “kids” of all ages, whether its a cold beverage at the end of a day or a game of pool or ping pong.  The outdoors offer up a roaring fire pit, hot tub and plenty of lighting for safe travels around the property.

As an added benefit, the floor was finished with high-quality, low-VOC formula finish that can be easily touched up over the years with minimal if any sanding required. This equates to a wide plank floor that will literally last for generations, while also being easy to care for and maintain.

“I did a great deal of comparisons with probably six other flooring providers. The bottom line. No floors look like Carlisle! People think they can distress the wood and make it look similar, however, they weren’t even close.”
Mixed Media

The overall style of this Colorado ski lodge combines modern with rustic in perfect harmony.  Great attention to detail, and a great amount of time went into creating spaces that featured rustic underpinnings with modern accents to create the right balance.  In every room you find a combination of sleek and smooth marble, granite or concrete, combined with rustic stone or distressed Walnut Flooring.

Every room features some combination of natural stone, concrete, granite, with rustic Walnut flooring, exposed beams, wall paneling, or other natural elements. This mixture of materials lends itself to the modern rustic look.

Flooring Details

In order to create the right foundation for his design, Michael knew that he had to find the right floor.  He knew he wanted a wood floor with a rich, dark look, but he also wanted the floor to have some “character”. The flooring choice also had to withstand the drier climate and seasonal changes of Colorado.

It was with these goals in mind that he began working with Carlisle to design a custom wood floor.  To achieve the naturally dark appearance Wide Plank Walnut was the obvious chose.  Walnut is known as being a bit more formal and refined, so the design was enhanced to include Carlisle’s Signature Watermill Surface.

Along with the other architectural features of the home like the custom stone fireplace, industrial lighting, contemporary furniture, and rustic beams, this floor was pivotal in the final design aesthetic, while meeting all Michael’s goals for beauty, performance, and stability.

“You get what you pay for in this case, and this house, it deserved the best! People go crazy for this wide plank, walnut, watermill distressed floor.”
